Experience
Jim received his PhD and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Methodist University and his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University. In addition to his career at Sandia National Laboratories, Jim has been a consultant to or worked for The General Electric Company, Boeing, Alcoa Aluminum, and Texas Instruments. Prior to joining Sandia, Jim was a professor of mechanical engineering and associate dean of engineering for research and graduate studies at Texas Tech University. His teaching and research interests were focused on the areas of thermal fluid sciences and numerical methods.
During his career, Jim has been involved in a number of projects associated with the design of gas turbine engines, simulation and analysis of electromechanical systems, wind turbine performance, aerodynamics of parachutes, and the characterization of aircraft and submarine wakes. He has also been involved in the development of gridless integral techniques associated with modeling both incompressible and compressible fluid flow as well as thermal radiation.
As manager of the Exploratory Simulation Technologies Department, Jim leads a diverse group whose mission is to develop advanced or novel simulation capabilities that utilize high-performance computational methods to solve currently intractable problems of national importance.
